Description of Target | Native influenza H1N1 antigen preparation is presented as semi-purified allantoic fluid from chicken eggs infected with New Caladonia 20/99 (H1N1) influenza A virus. Influenza is an acute infection of the respiratory tract caused by the Influenza virus, of which there are several different types. Influenza A causes flu in birds and some mammals and is the most virulent of the influenza types, resulting in the most severe disease. Influenza infection in humans causes chills, fever, pharyngitis, muscle pain, headaches, coughing and weakness. The virus is transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes or through saliva, nasal secretions, faeces and blood. Infection may occur through direct contact with infected bodily fluid or contaminated surfaces. Influenza viruses mutate rapidly, making vaccines less effective from one season to the next. This particular strain of influenza is a reassortant virus that includes genetic components of the H1N1 influenza pandemic swine flu in a culture-adapted virus that has been selected for its qualities as a vaccine-producing strain. The live reassortant virus has passed safety testing in ferrets, in which it is attenuated for pathogenicity relative to wild-type A/California/4/2009 virus. Because A/California/4/2009 is identified as a variant strain of a pandemic virus, live derivatives must be handled under BSL2+ facilities and procedures. Native influenza H1N1 antigen preparation contains a high concentration of viral antigens as well as some egg proteins from allantoic fluid. |
