Histidine rich protein-2 is secreted by Plasmodium falciparum into the host erythrocyte cytosol and is expressed on the cell membrane or associated with the cytoskeleton of infected erythrocytes. Histidine rich protein-2 is thought to polymerise free haem to form haemozoin.
