Additional InformationDescription: Keratins are a family of intermediate filament proteins that assemble into filaments through forming heterodimers of one type I keratin (keratins 9 to 23) and one type II keratin (keratins 1-8). The two keratin types share only 30% sequence homology. Keratins demonstrate tissue- and differentiation-specific expression profiles. Cytokeratin 8 belongs to the type B (basic) subfamily of keratins and exists in combination with keratin 18. It is expressed in all simple type epithelia tissues (e.g., liver, pancreas, kidney, gut epithelial lining) but not in stratified squamous epithelia. Cytokeratin 8 is also present in the majority of adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas but is absent in most squamous cell carcinomas.

CharacterizationTo ensure acceptable performance, each batch of product is tested by ELISA, immunohistochemical staining(HT29 and HCC38 cells), or Western blotting (HT29 and HCC38 cell lysates) to conform to characteristics of astandard reference reagent.
WarningReagents contain sodium azide. Sodium azide is very toxic if ingested or inhaled. Avoid contact with skin, eyes,or clothing. Wear eye or face protection when handling. If skin or eye contact occurs, wash with copiousamounts of water. If ingested or inhaled, contact a physician immediately. Sodium azide yields toxic hydrazoicacid under acidic conditions. Dilute azide- containing compounds in running water before discarding to avoidaccumulation of potentially explosive deposits in lead or copper plumbing.

Gene SymbolKRT8
Gene Full NameKeratin, type II cytoskeletal 8
Alias SymbolsK8, KO, CK8, CK-8, CYK8, K2C8, CARD2
NCBI Gene Id3856; 16691
Protein Namekeratin, type II cytoskeletal 8
Description of TargetThis gene is a member of the type II keratin family clustered on the long arm of chromosome 12. Type I and type II keratins heteropolymerize to form intermediate-sized filaments in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. The product of this gene typically dimerizes with keratin 18 to form an intermediate filament in simple single-layered epithelial cells. This protein plays a role in maintaining cellular structural integrity and also functions in signal transduction and cellular differentiation. Mutations in this gene cause cryptogenic cirrhosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene.
